In a stunning twist to the NBA gambling scandal, federal agents arrested 13 reputed mobsters — including the son of Gambino captain Angelo “Quack Quack” Ruggiero — for their alleged role in a multi-million-dollar poker and betting scheme.
The bust revealed deep mafia ties stretching from New York’s underworld to NBA locker rooms, with figures like “Fat Nick” Minucci and Ernest “Ernie” Aiello now facing federal charges. Prosecutors say the mobsters used rigged card shufflers and secret contact lenses to cheat their way into huge profits.

Seven NBA games between February 2023 and March 2024 have been identified as part of the case. Rozier is said to have been involved in one between the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans, when he was playing for the Hornets.
Rozier is alleged to have told a friend that he would leave the game early due to injury. The friend and his associates then placed bets, or directed others to bet, "more than $200,000" that Rozier would underperform expectations in the game, prosecutors said.
He left the game after nine minutes, they said, which resulted in tens of thousands of dollars in betting profits for those involved.
During the game, Rozier scored just five points before going off because of a sore right foot, according to the official NBA match report.
Before that game, he averaged 35 minutes of playing time and about 21 points per game.
"As the NBA season tips off, his career is already benched, not for injury but for integrity," New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.
These games “created a financial pipeline for ‘La Cosa Nostra’ to help fund and facilitate their organized criminal activity,” Christopher Raia, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s New York field office, said at a press conference on Thursday. “This alleged scheme wreaked havoc across the nation, exploiting the notoriety of some and the wallets of many to fund the Italian crime family here in New York.”
La Cosa Nostra refers to one of the three major mafia confederations in Italy from which American-Italian mafia organizations are descended, Daniel DellaPosta, a professor of sociology at Pennsylvania State University who has studied criminal networks between mafia families, tells TIME.
The confederation in New York involves five families, who have dominated the city’s organized crime scene since they emerged from a pivotal conflict called the Castellammarese War in the 1930s. In total, 13 members and associates of four of those five have been indicted in the federal gambling investigations.
